Autumn 2016

Welcome to the autumn edition of Aluminate, the graduate newsletter from the University of Cumbria.

We have enjoyed welcoming our students back to campus over the last few weeks and seeing lots of enthusiastic faces ready for a new term.  Many parts of our campuses have been given fabulous new make-overs over the summer, and even some new buildings too. Read our article below and see the pictures of all the exciting changes to your favourite campuses.

In August the university was delighted to welcome Professor Julie Mennell as our new vice chancellor. Julie has settled in well, and gave her first staff forums recently outlining her exciting plans and vision for the university. Professor Mennell gave an interview to the Cumberland News in her first week, you can read it here.

The Olympics and Paralympics were all over the news of course this summer, but we were watching one athlete with special interest. Class of 2009 alumnus Karen Darke, won the gold medal for hand cycling in the Paralympics. Closer to home, husband and wife team Cloudscape Studios, class of 2006 Louise Kneath and class of 2001 Ian Gilbertson, won the Creative City Award in the Carlisle Living Awards.  More recently class of 2016 alumnus Danielle Cross, won the Outstanding New Teacher award at the CN Group Golden Apples.  Nigel Pearson class of 1980 St. Martin’s College alumnus, had his teaching work recognised with an award from the German Embassy. Julie McCracken class of 2014 mentoring and coaching in education, has had her first book published; ‘Clean Language in the Classroom’. A huge well done and congratulations to all our fantastic alumni.

If you have a story to share, or hear of your fellow alumni doing anything interesting, please do let us know… email me alumni@cumbria.ac.uk.

Best wishes

20 years of sport at University of Cumbria and St. Martin's College

In July 2017 the University of Cumbria and St Martin's College are celebrating 20 years of Sport Graduates. We are hoping to hold an anniversary meal at the Lancaster Campus on Saturday 15th July with past and present staff and students in attendance.

In run up to this event we are hoping to get back in touch with as many graduates as possible. We have set up a Facebook page where we hope to reconnect old friends, tutors and celebrate the successes of our alumni. We hope you will join us and share your stories.

Vote for Shining Stars!

Katie Slavin-Trower, Class of 2014 drama alumnus, runs Shining Stars Theatre School in Glasgow. The school is for young people and adults with additional support needs. Katie has been nominated for an award for her work and we think she is just fantastic!

Shining Stars currently perform in a local hall that does not meet the needs of the pupils.

They need your HELP.

Please take two minutes to vote for them here to be in with a chance of wining funding for their own hall and allow this wonderful school to grow.

 Thank you!
